Strengthening the Foundation: Bentara Papua Undergoes Organizational Development Process with Menjadi.org
30 July 2026 - by Admin

Manokwari, West Papua — July 30, 2026.
For three days, from July 28 to 30, 2026, the Bentara Papua team took part in a series of Organizational Development (OD) sessions facilitated by Menjadi.org, held at Bentara Papua's office in Manokwari, West Papua. The activity marks part of Bentara Papua's long-term commitment to strengthening its institutional capacity not simply another training session to check off.

More Than Training, an Investment in the Long Run

When people talk about change in Papua, what is most often seen are the programs in the field: community accompaniment, advocacy, and conservation work. But behind every impactful program stands an organization that must keep learning, adapting, and improving the way it works.

It was with this understanding that Bentara Papua chose not to stop at program achievements alone, but to also revisit its internal foundations. For Bentara Papua, strengthening organizational capacity is a long-term investment. With a stronger foundation, the organization hopes to bring about partnerships, services, and impact that are increasingly meaningful for communities across the Land of Papua extending well beyond the immediate benefit of a single training session.

Three Days of Reflection, Discussion, and Shared Learning

Together with facilitators from Menjadi.org, the entire Bentara Papua team revisited how the organization works, identified its challenges, and explored opportunities to grow. The process unfolded through a series of reflection sessions, group discussions, and idea-mapping on flip charts not a one-way presentation, but a collaborative process involving every member of the team. This OD process covered several important aspects of organizational management, including:

  • Team management
  • Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL)
  • Data management
  • Fundraising
  • Organizational values and culture

Why an Onion? Peeling Back the Layers of an Organization

One of the frameworks used throughout the process was the onion analogy: Organizational Development is not only about fixing what is visible on the surface. Like peeling an onion, each layer uncovered helps deepen the understanding of an organization's condition from physical and human resources, knowledge and skills, systems and structure, vision-mission-goals-strategy, down to the innermost layer: values, identity, and leadership relationships.

This principle reinforces a shared belief: sustainable impact is not born from good programs alone, but also from an organization with a clear vision, a strong system, and a team that continues to grow.

Every Change Begins with a Question

Throughout the process, the Bentara Papua team was invited to formulate reflective questions that now serve as the foundation for future improvement, including:

  • Does the system we have built truly support the organization's goals?
  • How can collaboration run more effectively?
  • What needs to be improved for the organization to keep growing?

Through discussion, idea-mapping, and shared reflection, every team member contributed to evaluating the organization's systems and ways of working, strengthening collaboration across teams, developing more effective steps for improvement, and building a culture of learning and growing together. Because a strong organization is not built by good programs alone, but also by a process of learning, collaboration, and the courage to keep improving.

A Journey That Doesn't End Here

Bentara Papua extends its gratitude to Menjadi.org for its guidance and for creating a learning space full of reflection over these three days. This OD process is emphasized not as an endpoint, but as one point along a longer journey of institutional strengthening. An organization that keeps learning is believed to be better prepared to bring about sustainable change for communities across the Land of Papua.
